Jingle Juice

Jingle juice is pomegranate and cranberry juice spiked with gin, lime and orange liqueur, then lengthened with a cold bottle of prosecco. Frozen cranberries and pomegranate seeds float on the top. Ten minutes in one bowl, and it pours twenty two glasses.

The prosecco goes in last and gets folded through once, not stirred in with everything else. The recipe lists it with the juices and says stir to combine, which flattens a whole bottle before the first glass is poured.

Ice turns up in the method and is nowhere on the ingredient list. It matters here, because the bowl needs about four cups. That is a third of what you are serving, so buy a bag rather than raiding the tray.

Two dark juices sharpened with lime and lifted with gin and orange liqueur, then lengthened with cold prosecco. Frozen cranberries and pomegranate seeds do the chilling and the decoration at once.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups pomegranate juice

  • 6 cups cranberry juice

  • 1 1/2 cups gin

  • 2/3 cup lime juice (from about 6 limes), plus lime slices for garnish

  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier

  • One 750-milliliter bottle prosecco, chilled

  • About 4 cups ice

  • 2 cups frozen cranberries

  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds

  • Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish

Directions

  • Mix the juices: Add the pomegranate juice, cranberry juice, gin, lime juice and orange liqueur to a large punch bowl and stir to combine.
  • Add the ice: Add enough ice to chill the bowl right through.
  • Add the prosecco: Pour in the chilled prosecco last and fold it through once, no more than that.
  • Garnish and serve: Scatter the frozen cranberries, pomegranate seeds and lime slices over the top, then ladle into cups and finish each one with a sprig of mint.

FAQs

How much ice does it need?

About four cups, which chills a gallon of liquid without turning it pale. The two cups of frozen cranberries already in the recipe do some of that work, so start with less and top up. A single large block melts slower than cubes if you have the freezer space.

Can I mix it ahead?

Combine the two juices, the gin, the lime and the orange liqueur a day early and keep that base cold. The prosecco and the ice go in as guests arrive. Chilling the base properly means you need less ice later, which keeps the color deep.

Why pomegranate and cranberry together?

Cranberry on its own is sharp and thin, and pomegranate brings body and a darker red. Six cups of each is a deliberate balance rather than a substitution. Use all cranberry and you will want more lime to make up for it.

Can I make it without the gin?

Leave out the gin and the orange liqueur and you have a very good juice punch, though it loses the backbone. Swap the prosecco for sparkling white grape juice to keep the fizz. For an alcohol free bowl built that way, try this christmas sherbet punch.

What do I serve with it?

Something salty and warm, because this is cold, sharp and fruity all the way through. Bread covers it and people eat it standing up. A plate of roasted garlic bread next to the bowl works.
